How to Read Your SCE Meter After Solar Installation

With the shift from analog to digital and now to bi-directional smart meters, reading your SCE meter can become confusing, especially after installing a solar electric system. Like digital clocks, these new displays can make reading numbers faster—if you know what the numbers mean. Below is a breakdown of Southern California Edison’s meter displays to help homeowners better understand their electric bills and keep track of their Net Metering accuracy after going solar.

Screen Flash – SYNC NET

This screen indicates “SYNC NET,” signaling that the smart meter is connected and communicating with the utility’s monitoring system.

Screen Flash – Full Digital Light Up

This is a display error check, confirming that there are no issues with the meter’s display.

Screen Flash – CODE 001

This code shows the total kilowatt-hours your home has consumed from the utility grid. It’s essentially the power your home has used and what you’re paying Southern California Edison for.

Screen Flash – CODE 071

If you have a solar system, this code shows the total extra kilowatt-hours your system has produced and sent back to the grid. This only happens when your system generates more power than your home is currently using.

Screen Flash – CODE PLD – CODE 252

This internal programming code should remain constant, indicating that the meter is set up for Net Metering.

Screen Flash – CODE 082

This code provides an instantaneous reading of electricity usage. If the arrow points to the right, your home is using power from the grid. If it points to the left, your solar system is sending excess power back to the grid.

By understanding these codes, you can better monitor your solar system’s performance and ensure accurate billing with SCE.
